Venezuelans regain access to social network X after yearlong block

The social network X was once again accessible in Venezuela on Tuesday, more than a year after it was blocked under former president Nicolás Maduro, who was captured by U.S. forces last week.

Interim President Delcy Rodríguez updated her profile on the platform and posted a message calling for unity, economic stability, and social justice.

Access to X remained uneven across the country, with some users reporting slow connections or intermittent service as restrictions appeared to ease.

The platform, owned by billionaire Elon Musk, had been blocked after a public feud between Musk and Maduro, who lashed out following criticism of his contested 2024 election.

After that vote, Maduro was declared the winner despite allegations of fraud and suspended X in August, cutting off a key outlet for political debate and public communication.

Before the shutdown, X was widely used by Venezuelans, including government officials, lawmakers and public institutions, many of whom stopped updating their accounts once the block took effect.

Rodríguez assumed power after Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were captured by U.S. military forces on Jan. 3 during operations that left more than 100 people dead, according to official figures.

The couple faces U.S. charges related to alleged drug trafficking.

Maduro’s X account was also updated on Tuesday with a photo of the former leader and his wife, though it was not clear who posted the image.
