UAE president accepts US invitation to join ‘Board of Peace’

The UAE’s president has accepted an invitation to join US President Donald Trump’s “Board of Peace”, the foreign ministry said Tuesday, the body meant to oversee post-war reconstruction in Gaza.

“Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates, has accepted the invitation from the United States to join the Board of Peace,” the ministry said in a statement.

The Board of Peace was initially conceived as a mechanism to coordinate rebuilding efforts in the Palestinian territory, but its founding charter suggests its scope may extend beyond Gaza. The board is described as an international organization aimed at promoting stability, restoring governance and securing lasting peace in conflict-affected areas.

Under the charter, the board will be chaired by President Trump. It states that the body will “undertake such peace-building functions in accordance with international law,” and will operate as a forum for member states invited by the U.S. president.

Each member state is expected to be represented by its head of state or government and will serve a term of up to three years. However, the charter exempts countries that contribute more than $1 billion in cash funds within the first year from the three-year term limit.

The board is required to hold at least one voting meeting each year, with each member having one vote. While decisions will generally be made by a majority of members present and voting, the chairman will have the authority to approve decisions and cast a deciding vote in the event of a tie.
