UAE approves global AI policy to shape responsible innovation and governance

The UAE Cabinet, under the leadership of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, has officially endorsed the country’s international policy on artificial intelligence (AI). This move marks a significant milestone in the UAE’s efforts to position itself as a global leader in AI governance and innovation.

The policy was developed through a collaborative effort between the Office of the Assistant Foreign Minister for Advanced Science and Technology and the Office of the Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications.

It is a strategic component of the UAE’s broader foreign policy framework, addressing the complex and far-reaching challenges AI poses on the global stage.

Omar Sultan Al Olama, Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications, emphasized the UAE’s pivotal role in shaping global AI governance.

He noted that the UAE actively contributes to multilateral platforms, helping to define international standards and frameworks that will guide the future of AI.

“The UAE has become a significant player in the global governance of artificial intelligence,” he said, underscoring the country’s commitment to responsible AI development.

Omran Sharaf, Assistant Foreign Minister for Advanced Science and Technology, added that this policy will not only solidify the UAE’s leadership in AI development but also foster stronger relationships with global strategic partners.

By aligning its foreign policy with global AI standards, the UAE enables local stakeholders—ranging from private enterprises to research institutions—to engage with AI challenges on an international scale.

The AI policy is founded on six key principles: advancement, cooperation, community, ethics, sustainability, and security. These principles are aimed at ensuring that AI development in the UAE aligns with ethical, social, and environmental priorities while promoting economic diversification and innovation through cutting-edge technological solutions.

A core aspect of the policy includes active participation in international AI forums to help shape global standards, advocate for transparency, and enforce ethical measures.

The UAE also supports the creation of international alliances for AI governance and security, with a focus on preventing harmful uses of AI, ensuring data privacy, and fostering responsible AI research and development globally.

The UAE’s strategic approach to AI highlights its ambition to not only lead in technological advancement but also to drive international cooperation in creating a responsible and secure AI landscape.
