U.S. President Donald Trump will hold talks on the Iran war on Monday with his top national security advisors, U.S. media reported.
The meeting comes as negotiations between Washington and Tehran appear to have stalled, with Iran’s foreign minister blaming the U.S. for the breakdown of talks held in Pakistan this month.
What is Trump’s security meeting on Iran about?
Trump is expected to discuss next steps with his senior national security and foreign policy team, according to Axios correspondent Barak Ravid.
ABC News cited two unidentified U.S. officials confirming the meeting, adding that a new Iranian deal proposal fell short of Washington’s red lines. The talks in Pakistan were the first and only round of negotiations so far.
What deal did Iran propose to end the conflict?
Iran’s proposal centered on reopening the Strait of Hormuz and ending a U.S. naval blockade of the vital waterway. Under the plan, nuclear negotiations would be postponed to a later stage, Axios reported.
Washington has not accepted the terms, with officials indicating the offer does not meet its core conditions.
Why did Trump cancel his envoys’ trip to Pakistan?
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi’s visit to Islamabad had raised hopes for fresh negotiations over the weekend. Those hopes faded after Trump cancelled a planned trip by envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
Trump told Fox News that if Iran wanted talks, “they can come to us, or they can call us.”
