Senior Hezbollah commander killed by Israel in Beirut suburbs

Israel killed a senior commander from Hezbollah’s elite Radwan force in a strike on Beirut’s southern suburbs on Wednesday, the first attack on the area in nearly a month.

A source close to Hezbollah told AFP the target was Malek Ballout, the force’s operations commander. At least 11 other people were killed in separate Israeli strikes across southern and eastern Lebanon the same day.

Who was the Hezbollah commander killed in the Beirut strike?

The commander killed was Malek Ballout, the operations commander of Hezbollah’s Radwan force, according to a source close to the group who spoke to AFP on condition of anonymity.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed his military had targeted “the commander of Hezbollah’s Radwan force.” A Lebanese security source said the strike hit an apartment where Radwan leaders were holding a meeting.

Where did Israel strike in Beirut and what was hit?

Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency reported that Israeli warplanes struck the Ghobeiri district in Beirut’s southern suburbs, a Hezbollah stronghold.

An AFP correspondent saw a building covered in rubble following the attack, with residents leaving the area carrying their belongings. Many of the suburb’s residents had already fled after Hezbollah drew Lebanon into the war in March and had not returned despite a truce in place since April 17.

Beirut and its southern suburbs had been spared Israeli attacks since April 8, when strikes across Lebanon killed more than 350 people.

Wednesday’s strike came as US President Donald Trump said there was “a very good chance” of sealing a peace deal with Iran. Israel has continued bombing Lebanon, particularly the south, since the truce, with Hezbollah retaliating by launching attacks on Israeli troops.

How many people have been killed in Israeli strikes on Lebanon?

Israeli strikes on Lebanon have killed more than 2,700 people and displaced over one million since March 2, particularly from the south, east and Beirut’s suburbs. World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Wednesday that 152 attacks on healthcare facilities had been verified, resulting in 103 deaths and 241 injuries. Those attacks forced the closure of three hospitals and 41 primary health centres, with a further 16 hospitals damaged.

What happened in southern and eastern Lebanon on Wednesday?

Earlier strikes on southern and eastern Lebanon killed at least 11 people, according to the Lebanese health ministry. In Saksakiyeh, four people were killed and 33 wounded, including six children and four women. The NNA also reported strikes on the town of Yater and several other locations across the south.

The Israeli military said Thursday that an explosive drone strike wounded four soldiers, one severely, in southern Lebanon the previous day.

Israeli army chief Eyal Zamir visited troops in the south, where Israel has established a “yellow line,” and vowed to “seize every opportunity to deepen the dismantling of Hezbollah.” The terms of the ceasefire allow Israel to act against planned, imminent or ongoing Hezbollah attacks.
