Rubio speaks with Saudi foreign minister about regional stability

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan on Wednesday and discussed the threats from Iran to regional stability and other developments in the region, the U.S. State Department said.

“The Secretary expressed gratitude to the Foreign Minister for Saudi Arabia’s response to the attack on U.S. Embassy Riyadh,” State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott said in a statement.

“They also discussed the continued threats the Iranian regime poses to regional stability, as well as other developments in the region,” Pigott added.

In a separate call the same day, Rubio also spoke with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, as tensions escalated after missile attacks from Iran.

The State Department said Rubio pledged Washington’s full support for Turkey.

Earlier on Wednesday, Turkey said NATO air defenses intercepted and destroyed an Iranian ballistic missile that had been headed into Turkish airspace.

Rubio told Fidan that the attack on Turkey’s sovereign territory was “unacceptable” and reaffirmed full U.S. backing, the department said in a statement.
