A British maritime security agency reported two separate incidents involving merchant vessels in waters near Iran and Oman on Wednesday, including one in which an Iranian gunboat allegedly opened fire on a container ship and another in which a cargo vessel was fired upon after leaving an Iranian port.
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) center said a container ship transiting roughly 15 nautical miles northeast of Oman was approached by an Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) gunboat, which then fired on the vessel, causing “heavy damage” to its bridge. It said there were no casualties and no fire or environmental impact, and that the crew remained safe.
British maritime security firm Vanguard Tech said the Liberian-flagged vessel had been informed it was cleared to transit the Strait of Hormuz. Iran’s Tasnim news agency, however, said the ship had “ignored warnings from Iran’s armed forces.”
In a separate incident, UKMTO said it received a report from the master of an outbound cargo ship that had been fired upon around eight nautical miles west of Iran. The vessel subsequently came to a stop in the water, although the crew was reported safe and accounted for, with no damage reported.
It was not immediately clear whether the two incidents were linked.
The reports come amid heightened maritime tensions in the region, where shipping through the strategic Strait of Hormuz has been disrupted in recent weeks. Iran has imposed restrictions in the area since the escalation of its conflict with Israel and the United States, while Washington has maintained pressure on Iranian maritime activity.
U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that a truce framework between the parties would be extended following its initial implementation earlier this month.
