Iran’s paramilitary Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said Saturday it carried out a drone attack targeting a commercial ship it described as linked to Israel in Gulf waters, setting the vessel on fire.
In a statement published on its Sepah News website, the Guards said they targeted the MSC Ishyka, which they claimed was “owned by the Israeli regime and flying the flag of a third country.”
The Guards said the vessel was hit near the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global shipping route.
In an earlier social media post, its naval forces said a drone struck the ship in the strait, causing it to catch fire.
However, shipping data from MarineTraffic indicated the Liberian-flagged vessel was still moored at Khalifa Bin Salman Port as of Friday night.
There was no immediate independent confirmation of the attack or details on possible casualties or damage.
The reported strike comes amid heightened tensions in the Gulf, where commercial shipping routes have increasingly been affected by the widening regional conflict.
