India has received an invitation from U.S. President Donald Trump to join a proposed “Board of Peace” initiative aimed at addressing global conflicts, beginning with the war in Gaza, a senior Indian government official said on Sunday.
New Delhi has not yet decided whether it will participate, the official said. India’s foreign ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The invitation comes at a sensitive moment in U.S.-India relations, which have been strained by the failure to reach a trade agreement that would reduce tariffs on Indian exports to the United States. Indian goods currently face duties of up to 50%, among the highest imposed by Washington.
Trump has invited around 60 countries to join the initiative, including India’s neighbour Pakistan. Islamabad said earlier on Sunday it would engage in international efforts aimed at peace and security in Gaza.
U.S. officials say the proposed body would form part of the next phase of Trump’s broader Gaza plan, following more than two years of Israel’s military campaign that has devastated much of the Palestinian enclave.
Trump has said he intends to chair the board himself, promoting a strategy that combines political oversight with economic reconstruction. The approach has drawn criticism from rights groups and some international observers.
The White House has not outlined the specific role of individual members and said no Palestinian representatives have been named so far. It added that further appointments would be announced in the coming weeks.
