Four killed in post-poll violence in India’s West Bengal

Four people have been killed in post-poll violence in the eastern Indian state of West Bengal after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party secured a historic victory in state assembly elections.

Police and party officials confirmed the deaths Wednesday. The BJP won 206 of the 294 assembly seats, according to results announced Monday.

What happened after the West Bengal election results were announced?

Clashes between rival party supporters erupted in the state capital Kolkata after results were declared Monday, police said.

The BJP said two of its workers were killed, while the All India Trinamool Congress said two of its workers were beaten to death. A senior police officer confirmed four deaths and said one officer had been shot in the leg.

What did BJP and TMC say about the post-poll violence?

BJP state leader Samik Bharracharya told AFP that two party workers were killed after results were announced, adding that the party stands “for peace.”

The TMC, in a social media statement, described the “brutal murder” of two of its workers. TMC spokesman Narendranath Chakraborty told AFP that party offices were attacked across several areas of the state and that both victims were grassroots political workers.

Why is the BJP’s West Bengal victory significant?

Analysts say the BJP’s win in the largely Bengali-speaking state is one of its most significant since Modi was first elected prime minister in 2014.

The victory extends the party’s dominance beyond the Hindi-speaking heartland of north and central India. West Bengal, home to more than 100 million people, had been governed by Modi’s fierce critic Mamata Banerjee since 2011.

What happened to Mamata Banerjee after the election?

Banerjee, leader of the TMC and West Bengal’s outgoing chief minister, lost her own seat in the polls and has rejected the results.

Her defeat marks a dramatic reversal for a politician who had governed the state for 14 years and had been one of the most prominent opposition voices against Modi’s government.

The TMC had held power in West Bengal since sweeping out the Left Front in 2011.
