Fire near Dubai airport under control after ‘drone incident’: authorities

Dubai authorities brought a fire under control on Monday after it was sparked by a drone near the city’s international airport, temporarily halting flights. No injuries were reported.

Flights are now gradually resuming at Dubai International Airport, previously the world’s busiest for international travel, following the “drone-related incident” that ignited a fuel tank fire, the airport operator said.

“Flights to and from DXB are gradually resuming to selected destinations, following the temporary suspension implemented as a precautionary measure,” Dubai Airports said in a statement on X.

The temporary shutdown disrupted road and tunnel links to the airport, while Emirates suspended flights to Dubai. Some flights were diverted to Al Maktoum International Airport, the Dubai media office reported.

Monday’s incident is the third at Dubai airport since Iran began its attacks on Gulf nations on February 28, amid the ongoing U.S.-Israel conflict with Tehran. The strikes, Iran says, are aimed at the U.S. presence in the region, but civilian facilities—including airports, ports, and hotels—have also been targeted.

Traffic was temporarily halted on road and tunnel links with the airport, police said, while the Emirates airline suspended flights with Dubai.

Some flights were diverted to the Al Maktoum International Airport, the Dubai media office said on X.

“A drone incident in the vicinity of Dubai International Airport affected one of the fuel tanks,” the Dubai media office confirmed on X. Gulf Arab states, including the UAE, have faced more than 2,000 missile and drone attacks since late February, striking U.S. military bases, diplomatic missions, oil infrastructure, and civilian buildings.

While the UAE has borne the brunt of these attacks, all Gulf nations have been impacted and condemned Iran’s actions. Earlier on March 11, two drones fell near Dubai International Airport, which had already suffered damage during the first day of Iranian strikes.
