Dubai Customs announced 1,273 drug seizures at land borders, and air and sea ports in the Emirate last year.

The seized drugs included tramadol tablets, captagon, opium, heroin, cannabis seeds, marijuana, restricted narcotics, and other substances. In an operation dubbed “Cockpit,” Dubai Customs successfully intercepted 235 kg of hashish, preventing its trafficking into the country.

Mansoor Al Malik, Executive Director for the Policies and Legislation Division at Dubai Customs, confirmed to WAM, the official news agency of the UAE, that the department has prioritized protecting the community from narcotics and contraband. Its five-year plan for 2021-2026 includes a major strategic goal to lead safe customs worldwide.

Additionally, Rashid Al-Dhabbah Al-Suwaidi, acting director of Sea Customs Management, told WAM that Dubai has become an international model in countering drugs and their risks and health damages. The total seizure reports during 2023 amounted to 3,735, including 1,273 drug seizures.

Efficient Staff and Advanced Technologies

Al-Dabbah also highlighted that Dubai Customs is renowned for its efficient inspection officers, who are well-trained to combat illegal practices using the smart security system called “Siyaj.”

Siyaj is a smart, integrated security system designed to monitor customs ports in Dubai. It incorporates several advanced technologies, such as AI, binocular techniques, drones, eco-friendly electric cars, and unique devices to detect contraband and dangerous substances. The system relies on rapid intervention teams that operate around the clock, drones, and the K9 dog unit to support targeting and field inspection operations within the Customs campus.

Drug Laws: Harsh Penalties

Possession of even small amounts of drugs for personal use can result in up to 4 years of imprisonment, followed by deportation for non-citizens. For larger quantities involved in drug trafficking, the penalties can escalate to life imprisonment or even the death penalty.
