U.S. President Donald Trump said Saturday that Iran has 48 hours to reach a deal to open the vital Strait of Hormuz or face “Hell.”
On his Truth Social platform, Trump wrote, “Remember when I gave Iran ten days to MAKE A DEAL or OPEN UP THE HORMUZ STRAIT. Time is running out — 48 hours before all Hell will reign down on them. Glory be to GOD!”
Previous threats and shifting deadlines
Trump initially threatened on March 21 to “obliterate” Iran’s power plants, starting with its largest, if the country did not fully open the strait without threat within 48 hours.
Two days later, he said “very good and productive conversations” were taking place with Iranian authorities and postponed any strikes for five days.
He later extended the deadline again, with the current expiration set for 8:00 p.m. Monday (0000 GMT Tuesday).
Experts have warned that attacks targeting civilian energy infrastructure could constitute a war crime under international law, raising concerns over potential escalation in the region.
