Two top U.S. Army officials have made a rare wartime visit to Kyiv under President Donald Trump’s administration, arriving on an unannounced trip for talks with Ukrainian leaders in an effort to revive stalled peace negotiations with Russia, Politico reported Wednesday.
Army Secretary Dan Driscoll and Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George are expected to meet President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, top commanders and lawmakers, Politico said, citing people familiar with the visit’s planning.
Driscoll is also expected to meet Russian officials at a later date, the Wall Street Journal reported separately.
The White House and Pentagon did not immediately comment.
New push for a peace plan
The Trump administration has been quietly developing a new proposal to end the war in Ukraine in coordination with Russia, Axios reported Tuesday, citing U.S. and Russian officials.
The Wall Street Journal said the White House turned to Driscoll and senior commanders partly out of hope that Moscow would respond more readily to military intermediaries and out of frustration with earlier attempts that produced few results.
The visit comes as Russian forces advance slowly along parts of the front line and intensify missile and drone strikes on Ukrainian cities and energy sites. Meanwhile, Kyiv’s Western partners are searching for fresh ways to maintain weapons and ammunition supplies.
Polish and allied aircraft were deployed early Wednesday to secure Polish airspace after Russia launched strikes near the border with Poland, the armed forces of the NATO member said.
Rare senior visit under Trump
Since Trump took office in January, senior administration visits to Kyiv have been limited, with most conversations held in third countries or via video, making Driscoll and George’s arrival particularly notable.
Trump and Zelenskiy have met several times this year, including a tense Oval Office meeting in February, a short encounter at the Vatican in April, discussions at a NATO summit in June and an August summit in Washington on potential security guarantees for Ukraine.
Zelenskiy said Tuesday he plans to visit Turkey on Wednesday in a bid to restart talks with Russia on ending the war, now nearing its fourth year.
The meetings in Kyiv by the U.S. Army officers are expected to focus on Ukraine’s battlefield needs and overall strategy, including efforts to revive the dormant peace process with Moscow, Politico reported.
Trump has repeatedly vowed to end the war quickly and has pushed advisers to explore ceasefire ideas with Kyiv and Moscow, prompting concern in parts of Europe over any deal that could solidify Russia’s hold on captured territory.
