Senior UAE and Iranian officials held a call Wednesday to discuss de-escalation, UAE state media reported, marking the first high-level contact since ties deteriorated over the U.S.-Iran war.
UAE Vice President and Deputy Premier Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan held a phone call with Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Speaker of the Parliament of the Islamic Republic of Iran, during which they discussed regional developments and ways to de-escalate tensions in the region, according to a statement from the WAM news agency.
Since the start of the Middle East war, the UAE has taken a hawkish tone toward Iran, recalling its ambassador and closing its embassy after Tehran began a campaign targeting the Emirates and other Gulf countries.
Since the onset of Iranian attacks, UAE air defenses have engaged a total of 537 ballistic missiles, 26 cruise missiles and 2,256 unmanned aerial vehicles.
The attacks resulted in injuries to three individuals, all with minor injuries, bringing total injuries to 224. Those affected include individuals of various nationalities, including Emirati, Egyptian, Sudanese, Ethiopian, Filipino, Pakistani, Iranian, Indian, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan, Azerbaijani, Yemeni, Ugandan, Eritrean, Lebanese, Afghan, Bahraini, Comorian, Turkish, Iraqi, Nepalese, Nigerian, Omani, Jordanian, Palestinian, Ghanaian, Indonesian, Swedish, Tunisian, Moroccan and Russian.
Since the onset of the attacks, total fatalities have reached two, in addition to the killing of a Moroccan civilian contracted with the Armed Forces. Total civilian fatalities stand at 10, including nationals from Pakistani, Nepalese, Bangladeshi, Palestinian, Indian and Egyptian backgrounds.
