India says examining Bangladesh request for Hasina’s extradition

India is examining a request from Bangladesh for the extradition of the country’s former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the Indian foreign ministry spokesperson said on Wednesday.

The request, initially submitted in December and reiterated this month after Hasina was sentenced to death for her role in last year’s student protests crackdown, is being examined as part of India’s internal judicial and legal processes.

Hasina fled to India in August 2024 amid mass protests against her rule and has remained in hiding since.

On November 17, a court in Dhaka sentenced Hasina and former interior minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death in absentia after finding them guilty of crimes against humanity for a deadly crackdown on the student-led uprising. Bangladesh said Kamal is also believed to be in India.

“We urge the government of India to immediately extradite the two convicts to the Bangladeshi authorities,” Dhaka’s foreign ministry said, calling it “an obligatory responsibility for India.” New Delhi confirmed it received the earlier extradition request but declined further comment at the time.

Hasina’s 15-year tenure was marked by allegations of human rights abuses, including mass detentions and extrajudicial killings of political opponents. Bangladesh had also said it would seek an Interpol red notice for Hasina, but no such alert currently exists on the international police database.

Bangladesh’s interim leader Muhammad Yunus welcomed the court’s verdict, calling it “a historic decision” and urging citizens to maintain calm. “Everyone should refrain from any indisciplined acts or attempts to violate public order,” he said in a statement.
