Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has issued a new law establishing the Al Maktoum Archives, an institution dedicated to preserving and promoting the historical and cultural heritage of Dubai’s rulers and the Al Maktoum family.

The newly established Al Maktoum Archives Corporation, operating under the Executive Office of Sheikh Mohammed, will collect and safeguard a range of materials, including the biography, collections, and literary works of Sheikh Mohammed, reported WAM.

It will also focus on documenting the broader contributions of Dubai’s rulers and their pivotal role in shaping the emirate’s development.

As part of its mandate, the Corporation will develop a comprehensive digital archive, document oral histories, and produce multimedia content to make its materials accessible to researchers and future generations. Plans include training national expertise in archiving and record management to ensure professional oversight of historical preservation.

Collaboration with local, regional, and international organizations is also a key focus, with the Archives aiming to foster cultural awareness and exchange expertise. Historical documents, including official correspondence and records tied to the achievements of Dubai’s rulers and the Al Maktoum family, will be safeguarded to serve as resources for researchers, policymakers, and future generations.

The law requires all entities in Dubai holding relevant historical documents related to Dubai’s leadership to register them with the Al Maktoum Archives within one year. Unregistered materials will automatically become the property of the Corporation, and disposal of any documents without prior approval is prohibited.
