Qatar’s prime minister called for renewed diplomacy on an agreement with Iran on Friday, during a meeting in Washington with US Vice President JD Vance.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani discussed Pakistani-led efforts to broker a permanent peace amid a fragile ceasefire.
What did the Qatar PM and Vance discuss on Iran?
The two officials met at the White House to advance mediation efforts aimed at a lasting agreement with Iran. The Qatari prime minister urged all parties to engage with the ongoing process.
Qatar’s foreign ministry said he stressed the need for dialogue “leading to a comprehensive agreement that achieves lasting peace in the region.”
What role does Qatar play in Iran diplomacy?
Qatar has long served as a key intermediary for the United States, engaging in dialogue with Iran and liaising with Hamas to help broker ceasefires.
The wealthy emirate also hosts a major US air base, a role that has drawn repeated Iranian attacks on Qatari sites during the war. Iran has continued to strike those locations throughout the conflict.
The Qatari foreign ministry said Sheikh Mohammed “stressed the need for all parties to engage with the ongoing mediation efforts, to pave the way for addressing the root causes of the crisis through peaceful means and dialogue.”
The statement was posted on X following the Washington meeting. Qatar’s position as both a US partner and a channel to Tehran makes it central to any negotiated settlement.
