At least 9 killed as Israel pounds Lebanon despite ceasefire

Israel carried out strikes across Lebanon on Saturday, killing at least nine people in the south, authorities said. Raids also targeted a highway near Beirut, outside Hezbollah’s traditional strongholds.

The attacks were among the most intense since a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah took hold three weeks ago.

What is happening in Lebanon despite the ceasefire?

Israel has continued striking targets across Lebanon since a ceasefire went into force, killing dozens of people. Saturday’s attacks hit residential areas and a highway near Beirut, drawing Hezbollah drone fire into northern Israel in response.

Daily exchanges of fire, mostly in the south, have undermined the truce since it began.

What were the deadliest strikes on Saturday?

Lebanon’s health ministry said an Israeli strike on the town of Saksakiyeh killed seven people, including a girl, and wounded 15 others, including three children.

The Israeli military said it struck “Hezbollah terrorists operating from within a structure used for military purposes” and acknowledged reports of civilian casualties, saying the incident was under review.

In the city of Nabatieh, the ministry reported a strike on a motorbike carrying a Syrian man and his 12-year-old daughter. After the two moved away from the initial strike site, a drone attacked a second time, killing the father.

The drone then targeted the girl directly in a third strike. She was in life-saving surgery, the ministry said.

In the southern town of Bedias, one person was killed and 13 others were wounded, including six children and two women.

Did Israel warn civilians before the Lebanon strikes?

Israel’s military called on residents of nine villages to evacuate, saying it would act “forcefully” against Hezbollah. Neither Saksakiyeh nor Nabatieh, the locations of the two deadliest strikes, were among the villages listed in the warnings. The Israeli military said earlier on Saturday that it had struck more than 85 Hezbollah infrastructure sites in the preceding 24 hours.

Israel’s troops are also operating inside a self-declared “yellow line” running about 10 kilometers inside Lebanon along the border, where residents have been warned not to return.

How did Hezbollah respond to the Israel strikes?

Hezbollah said it launched drones into northern Israel on at least two occasions Saturday in response to the continued strikes. The Israeli military confirmed that several explosive drones entered Israeli territory, leaving one army reservist severely wounded and two others moderately injured. Hezbollah also claimed several attacks on Israeli military targets inside Lebanon using rockets and drones.

What is Hezbollah’s ‘new phase’ warning about?

Hezbollah lawmaker Hassan Fadlallah warned Saturday of “a new phase, in which the resistance will not accept a return to pre-March 2.” Hezbollah drew Lebanon into the broader Middle East conflict on March 2, when it launched rockets at Israel following the killing of Iran’s supreme leader in US-Israeli strikes.

Until that point, Hezbollah had largely refrained from retaliating against Israeli strikes.

“When it attacks our villages and suburbs, the enemy must expect a response,” Fadlallah said, referring to an Israeli strike earlier in the week on Beirut’s southern suburbs that Israel said killed a Hezbollah commander.

What is the status of ceasefire talks between Lebanon and Israel?

Lebanese and Israeli representatives are set to hold a fresh round of direct talks in Washington next week. A first meeting took place days before US President Donald Trump announced the ceasefire, with a second round held when he announced a three-week extension.

Fadlallah dismissed the talks as a “path of concessions” and called on his government to withdraw from direct negotiations in favor of indirect ones.

Under the ceasefire terms released by Washington, Israel reserves the right to act against “planned, imminent or ongoing attacks.”

Israeli attacks on Lebanon have killed nearly 2,800 people since March 2, including dozens since the truce went into force, according to Lebanese authorities.
