China urges Pakistan to step up mediation between Iran and US

China has urged Pakistan to intensify its mediation efforts between Iran and the United States and help reopen the Strait of Hormuz, Chinese state media reported on Wednesday.

Foreign Minister Wang Yi made the call in a phone conversation with his Pakistani counterpart Ishaq Dar. The contact came as US President Donald Trump is set to arrive in Beijing for talks with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

What did China ask Pakistan to do on Iran-US mediation?

Wang Yi called on Pakistan to “step up mediation efforts, and contribute to properly addressing issues related to opening the Strait of Hormuz,” according to state news agency Xinhua.

He added that China would continue to support Pakistan’s mediation role and make its own contribution. Both sides agreed to remain in close contact on matters of mutual interest.

What did Pakistan say about the Wang Yi call?

Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry, in a separate statement, said the two ministers exchanged in-depth views on recent regional developments, including Islamabad’s ongoing efforts to facilitate engagement between Tehran and Washington.

Wang Yi “reiterated appreciation and support for Pakistan’s constructive mediation role,” the ministry said. Both sides also underscored the importance of maintaining a durable ceasefire and ensuring uninterrupted passage through the Strait of Hormuz.

What is Pakistan’s role in Iran-US talks?

Pakistan has positioned itself as a mediator between the United States and Iran, which have been engaged in indirect talks aimed at a potential peace agreement following recent conflict. Islamabad’s mediation efforts have drawn recognition from both Beijing and other regional players. The role places Pakistan at the center of one of the most consequential diplomatic efforts in the Middle East.

On Tuesday, Iran rejected calls to revise its proposals in the negotiations, which Trump described as “garbage”.

China, a key strategic and economic partner of Iran, has a direct interest in a resolution that restores stability in the region and keeps the Strait of Hormuz open to oil shipping.
