Veteran Bollywood actor Govinda was hospitalized Tuesday after an accidental gunshot wound at his Mumbai home. The accident happened at 4:45 a.m. as Govinda prepared to leave for a 6 a.m. flight to Kolkata.
According to Indian media reports, the actor’s licensed revolver discharged unexpectedly while he was placing it in its case. The weapon slipped from his hands and accidentally discharged, striking Govinda’s knee, and causing severe bleeding. He was rushed to Criti Care Hospital in Mumbai, where doctors successfully removed the bullet.
His manager, Shashi Sinha, confirmed Govinda is in stable condition. In an audio clip shared by the Indian Express, Govinda thanked fans and assured them he’s now recovering.
“Due to your blessings, my parents’ blessings, and the grace of my guru, I was shot, but the bullet has been removed. I’m grateful to the doctors here, especially Dr. Garwal. Thank you all for your love and well wishes.” Govinda said.
The incident has sparked discussions about gun safety and the importance of proper handling of firearms, even for licensed owners.
Govinda, known for his comedic roles and dance performances, has been a prominent figure in Hindi cinema since the 1980s. Fans and fellow actors have flooded social media with messages of concern and support, shocked by the news of his injury.
